Prevent display of “My Network Places” icon on desktop (For All Users).

You have a choice to display the desired standard icons on the Desktop. If you don’t use any network services, you can hide the “My Network Places” icon from Desktop and Windows Explorer.

Tweak for : Windows XP, Windows 2003
The thought of clutter-free desktop since Windows XP, present Recycle Bin as the only icon on the desktop. You have a choice to display the desired standard icons on the Desktop.

To allow using the icons available with old systems, Windows provides new Start menu, which shows some of the common icons in its 2-panel display. However, if you switch to Classic Start menu style, all the old icons are displayed by default.

Through this setting you can hide the “My Network Places” icon, if displayed on your desktop.

For this, go to Start > Run menu, enter “regedit” and navigate to the registry path listed below. Now, right-click and modify the Dword value “{208D2C60-3AEA-1069-A2D7-08002B30309D}” on HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry paths. Update their value data with “1” to hide “My Network Places” icon on desktop.

However, if you show the icon again, change the value data to “0” or delete the value.

Refresh view of your computer for the changes to take effect.

NOTE:
The restrictions will apply only when you use new Start menu display.

Hide My Network Places on Desktop (Default).reg

The '.reg' file can hide "My Network Places" system icon from the 'Desktop'.

Show My Network Places on Desktop.reg

The '.reg' file can show "My Network Places" system icon on the 'Desktop' by default.

Apply registry settings according below given steps of screenshots with related changes.

'My Network Places' icon is hidden from the 'Desktop'.

'My Network Places' icon is visible on the 'Desktop' by default.

First, click the 'Start' button, and select 'Run'. In the resulting dialog box, type "regedit".

Second, go to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel\] and right click on the 'DWORD value' "{208D2C60-3AEA-1069-A2D7-08002B30309D}" and select 'Modify'.

Finally, set the 'Value Data' to "1" in the textbox provided and click on 'OK'.

Hide the “Accessibility Options” system icon in Control Panel (For Windows 98/Me).
