Messenger Service is a network-based system notification service originally designed for use by system administrators to notify Windows users about their networks. This service is helpful if network administrator has to provide any message regarding network operations to its users immediately. Although it has a similar name, is not related in any way to the .NET Messenger Service or the Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger instant messaging clients.

However, some advertisers have started using this service to send information via the Internet, and these messages could be used maliciously to distribute a virus. If you have Windows at home or in a small office that you manage yourself, you should disable the Messenger Service.

For this, go to Start > Run, enter “regedit” and navigate to the registry path listed below. Now, right-click and modify the DWORD value “Start” to “4” which can disable the Messenger Service. However, if you want to enable the service back you can opt to select the “Automatic” or “Manual” option, per your choice.
