Disable automatic codec downloads for Windows Media Player.

This setting disables Windows Media Player to download the codec files from the Microsoft's website automatically, or else in usual course it seeks your permission before download.

Codecs are used by Windows Media Player to decode encoded media files (such as MP3, MPEG, WMA etc). like CDs and DVDs to give the best experience of audio/video albums and Internet Radio.

To avoid automatic download of the available codecs apply the given registry setting.

For this, go to Start > Run menu, enter “regedit” and navigate to the registry path listed below. You can create a DWORD value “PreventCodecDownload”, if this value does not exist.

Now, right-click and modify the value data to “0” which can disable the option to download codecs automatically. However, if you set the value data to “1”, codecs download is permitted but changes to the option is disabled.

In case you want to remove all restrictions and enable the option to download codec, delete “PreventCodecDownload” value.

The changes take effect after a restart or logoff.

The ".reg" file can enable Automatic Codec downloads for Windows Media Player.

Apply registry settings according below given steps of screenshots with related changes.

The "Download codecs automatically" is unchecked and disabled when the value data is "0".

The "Download codecs automatically" is checked and disabled when the value data is "1".

The "Download codecs automatically" option is enabled by default.

First, click the 'Start' button, and select 'Run'. In the resulting dialog box, type "regedit".

Second, go to the [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft] key, right-click and click on the "New > Key" to create a new key with the name "WindowsMediaPlayer".

Third, right-click on the blank area in the right pane and click on "New > DWORD Value" to create a new DWORD value with the name "PreventCodecDownload".

Fourth, right-click on the 'PreventCodecDownload' DWORD value and click on "Modify".

Finally, enter the value "0" or "1" in the text box and click on 'OK'.

Disable automatic updates for Windows Media Player.
