Command prompt configuration

This tweak lets you configure the Command prompt in more detailed form with the help of variables and special codes.

Tweak for : Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows 2000, Windows Vista
The format of the command prompt displays the current drive and path ("C:\>"). Variables and special codes can also be used to more meaningful command prompt.

For this, go to Start > Run menu, enter “regedit” and navigate to the registry path listed below. If the subkey “\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment” is not present, create it as explained below. Then, create an expandable string value name “Prompt”, if this value does not exist. Now, right-click and modify the value data box with any of the following characters to enable the setting:

You can easily configure command prompt by using any of the following characters:
ShownCommand
Current drive$N
Current drive and path$P
Current date$D
Current time$T
Windows version number$V

The following are commands that will display single char:
ShownCommand

'<'$L
'('$C
')'$F
(space)$S
(Causes a CR/LF; new line)$_


Click “OK” and close the registry editor. For default, just delete this entry.

After logoff or system restart, changes take effect.

Apply registry settings according below given steps of screenshots with related changes.

User defined Commands which run automatically at the time of the launch.

The Command Prompt default screen at the time of launch.

First, click the 'Start' button, and select 'Run'. In the resulting dialog box, type "regedit".

Go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment\] and create a Expandable String Value as "Prompt".

Now, right-click on Expandable String Value "Prompt" and select 'Modify'.

Finally, set the value data as per user defined Commands.

Disable MS-DOS prompt (For Current User).

This tweak lets you disable the use of the MS-DOS prompt in Windows.

Enable quick editing on Command Prompt (For Current User).

This tweak lets you use the quick editing features in Command Prompt.

Restrict loading of “Event Viewer” from Administrative Tools section.

This setting can disable loading of the snap-in “Event Viewer” from Administrative Tools section.

Restrict loading of “Internet Information Services (IIS)” snap-in into MMC.

Category : System > Console

MMC can load various snap-ins that are used to simplify system management tasks of daily routine. This setting can disable loading of the snap-in “Internet Information Services (IIS)” into MMC.

Hide “Device Manager” snap-in from Computer Management console file.

Category : System > Console

This setting can hide the snap-in “Device Manager” from Computer Management console file.
